Aspartame has received a brand new makeover thanks to its producer which has come up with an inventive new name for the poison.

Following much controversy over the side-effects of aspartame, Ajinomoto the makers of the toxin have decided to rebrand it as a “natural sweetener”.

It is currently known as AminoSweet, after originally operating under the trade names “Nutrasweet” and “Canderel”. It is made up of the chemical composition aspartic acid and phenylalanine – which is known for its carcinogenic effects.

Under strongly acidic conditions, aspartame produces methanol, which also has adverse health effects, and can lead to blindness.

Aspartame has been linked to diseases such as cancer, seizures, headaches, nervous system disorders such as MS, mood swings, panic disorders, lupus, weight gain, mental disorders, among others.

It is often added to diet drinks, which have been marketed as a “healthier” alternative to fizzy drinks. Additionally it is found in sugar-free desserts, processed foods and chewing gum.

In warm soft drinks, aspartame transforms into formaldehyde which is very strong carcinogen.

The chemical was originally developed as an anti-ulcer drug by James M. Schlatter, a chemist working for G.D. Searle & Company.

He accidentally discovered its sweet taste when he licked his finger, which had become contaminated with aspartame and it soon became widely used as a sweetener.

Problems were discovered with the drug-turned-sweetener after its approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), after concerns were raised over Searle’s safety testing program, including his testing of aspartame. The approval was rescinded the following year, but final approval was granted in 1981 despite there reportedly being conflicts of interest.

Ajinomoto said that they changed the branding of aspartame to “make it more appealing and memorable”.
