Facebook has been in talks with around half a dozen media companies in order to get greater control over news reports, it has been revealed.

If the talks prove to be successful, then news content would be hosted inside Facebook rather than users needing to tap a link to go to an external site.

However, what it will essentially mean is that when readers click on an article, an array of tracking tools allow the host site to collect valuable information on who they are, how often they visit and what else they have done on the web.

In a society where a disproportionate amount of people spend exorbitant amounts of time on the social networking site, essentially this would mean that not only would those users spend longer and longer time on the site, it also links a person’s personal data to news websites – and also to any comments they make on what they read.

This will allow the social networking giant to build an even bigger picture of a person;’s political leanings.

It could also significantly reduce the amount of traffic to smaller or independent websites.

How? Well, considering the leverage Facebook has if you are a news website that refuses to join in this program, over time you might experience a reduction in traffic compared to your rivals whose content will load seamlessly and be promoted by the FB algorithm.

However, the single most worrying prospect of all is that if the deal were to go ahead, essentially it could mean that Facebook would have unprecedented control over the news people are able to access. It will also allow the social media corporation to determine what is trending and considered important by billions of people across the world.
