Forecasters have once again predicted that the UK will be hit with a very bad winter. This time people should expect brutal winds and fierce blizzards, while record breaking snowfalls are likely to come about at the start of December. It has been predicted to last for around for three months. Over the course of the last few days the country has already started to feel the cold air, which has been blasted down from the Arctic. Heavy wintery showers are expected to cause widespread chaos across much of the country, with below-average temperatures lingering until February.

However, according to the Daily Express, long-range forecasters blamed the position of a fast-flowing band of air known as the jet stream near to Britain.

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, added: “We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades, which could at times grind the nation to a halt.

“Persistent cold snaps with some very heavy snowfall are likely, and I would not be surprised if some records are not broken this year. The main issue will be the extreme cold which is showing signs of really [setting] in, thanks to freezing winds from the north.”

The cause for this according to weather forecasters is due to the position of the jet stream, which is poor. It is expected to be blocked and thus will allow a continual flow of freezing Arctic air.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, was reported as saying that it is likely to be the worst winter for more than 100 years. This winter is likely to bring another big freeze with copious snow for many parts. His predictions are that we will experience a scenario similar to December 2010 or much worse.

It has been predicted that heavy snow falls will hit the north of the country. The northern half of the country should therefore brace themselves for the worst conditions.

Nevertheless for millions of pensioners, fears are already in place as many will have to face the question of whether to eat, or to heat. The reason for this is due to the sky high energy prices that have been set to rise by 10 per cent. A large percentage of elderly people are unable to heat their homes. Many will die from cold or from starvation. This is a dilemma that faces many families. Until something is done about energy companies putting up prices, we will find more deaths this winter as more and more people are unable to heat their homes adequately to survive a bitter winter that is on its way.
