A recent study carried out by scientists has discovered that the water we drink from the tap is linked to weight gain, depression and tiredness. Researchers at the University of Kent have found that the mineral, fluoride may be the main cause of triggering an underactive thyroid.

However, despite these findings, Public Health England, have somewhat dismissed these claims made in the study and maintained that, “water fluoridation is a safe and effective public health measure, and shows no association with reduced thyroid functions.”

In retaliation, Professor Stephen Peckham said: “consideration needs to be given to reduce fluoride exposure, and public dental health interventions should stop those reliant on ingested fluoride, and switch to topical fluoride-based and non-fluoride based interventions.”

This clearly shows that there is obviously conflicting evidence that Public Health England are refusing to take seriously.

Dr Sandra White, director of public health at Public Health England stated: “The body regularly reviews the evidence base for water fluoridation. The totality of evidence, accumulated over decades of research, tells us that water fluoridation is a safe and effective public health measure, and shows no association with reduced thyroid function.”

Although, Dr White reassures us that fluoride is safe, can we really trust these statements made by Public Health England? After all, why would the researchers at the University of Kent waste their time by making their report public, if there was no truth in it? It is only a matter of time before we see the real effects of the water we drink from the tap, but by then it could be too late.
