Theresa May has proposed an immigration bill designed to strip British citizens of their passports

The government has announced a sinister new plan which would pave the way for them to strip British citizens of their right to remain in the UK.

Theresa May has put forward a proposal to take away the rights of British citizens to reside in this country without due process in cases where the government claims that they are acting in a way which “seriously prejudices” the national interest.

This last minute amendment to the Immigration Bill not only contravenes the UN Declaration of Human Rights, but also goes against a variety of regional and international human rights treaties which guarantee the right to nationality, with special protections for stateless people.

It is also likely to break up families, with no provisions made for children of parents who have been made stateless.

Speaking in support of this new law, Immigration minister Mark Harper said: “Citizenship is a privilege, not a right. These proposals will strengthen the home secretary’s powers to ensure that very dangerous individuals can be excluded if it is in the public interest to do so.”

The law is also being supported by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.

Currently the law would only apply to those born outside the UK, but effectively gives the government the authority to kick anyone out of the country, regardless of whether they are British. In other words, it sets a precedent which has never been seen before in this country.

The proposals have come under fire from all sides of the political spectrum in the House of Lords.

Tory MP Alok Sharma, said: “Could I suggest to her… perhaps you should be looking to go even further and have similar sanctions against anyone who is British, irrespective of how they got it, if they do something that is so heinous against the British state?”.

In addition to the flagrant abuses of human rights that the law encourages, critics also fear that it could be used as a way to deter migrants from speaking out against any injustices or daring to criticise government policy.

Also included in the Immigration Bill is the demand for driving instructors, private landlords, GPs and others to check people’s immigration status.
