Barack Obama has launched his very own brand of doublespeak by defining war as “peace”.

In an infamous ‘War is Peace’ speech, Obama claimed: “We must declare war on war, so the outcome will be peace upon peace”.

Such a blatant redefinition of the English language and popular concepts has been criticised by many campaigners as yet another example of doublespeak. Doublespeak is a term coined by author George Orwell, in his book 1984, which is defined as language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words.

It may refer to the reversal of meaning (for example, naming a state of war “peace”), or using euphemisms to make the truth more palatable (e.g using terms such as ‘restructuring’ instead of ‘redundancy’ or the term ‘peacekeeping troops’ instead of ‘killer soldiers’.)

It is the same reason why we use the term ‘war’ instead of ‘murder’ or ‘paedophilia’ instead of ‘child rape’.

In this latest example courtesy of Obama, he is effectively, declaring war on peace.
