The government should interfere more in people’s lives, according to the British prime minister David Cameron.

He announced that Britain is “too passively tolerant” and should not be allowing people to go about their lives as they please.

In order to crack down on terrorism, or  minority “extremist” views that differed from Britain’s consensus, the government needs to get a stronger hold of the people, he argued.

He added that the government should not wait until people commit a crime before intervening.

He said: “For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens ‘as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone’. It’s often meant we have stood neutral between different values. And that’s helped foster a narrative of extremism and grievance.”

Last year David Cameron unveiled new legislation which could see “non-violent extremists” being jailed for 10 years and barred from speaking at public events.
