surveillance2

It is not surprising that every country in the world is getting into the big brother syndrome. According to Le Monde, “France ‘has vast data surveillance.” The reasons for this are the fact there is a large array of telecom network cables. The factory Alcatel, which specialises in new optic fibre technology making these cables, are obviously making them according to both international and national specifications. It is an American based company.

The data used, and transmitted via these optic fibres can be accessed by other French intelligence agencies. Regarding this Le Monde reports the fact that, “The foreign intelligence service intercepts computer and telephone data on a vast scale, like the controversial US Prism programme. The data is stored on a supercomputer at the headquarters of the DGSE intelligence service. The operation is outside the law and beyond any proper supervision.”
Have you ever tried to call home whilst living in France? Or have you called home to hear some strange echoing sound as you speak?

The answer is yes for many. One can tell the conversation is being listened to because of the echoing sound in the background, or the number not connecting the first time. These are just a few of the signs that your conversation being listened into.

One normally jokes to one’s family that it is the UK intelligence service eavesdropping again. But in fact it is France’s intelligence agencies, which can allegedly access the data secretly. It is not clear by the report in Le Monde whether or not DGSE surveillance goes as far as Prism used in the USA. But the data that is analysed goes as far as revealing whom one is speaking to, when and where. All connections and communications outside of France are monitored.

However, Le Monde goes further to report that, “all the data is being stored on three basement floors of the DGSE building in Paris.” This is equivalent to the MI6 building in London. The operation is designed, say’s experts, to uncover terrorist cells.

But in reality it means that anyone and everyone can be spied on without any reason. One doesn’t need to be labelled a terrorist. According to some officials, we are all terrorists unless we prove that we aren’t.
