GM salmon

Genetically improved fish has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it has been revealed.

The salmon, produced by Massachusetts-based firm AquaBounty Technologies, has been considered ‘safe’ by the regulatory body.

Although GM food such as soy and corn are already available, this will be the first engineered animal product to be approved for sale.

Under federal rules, the salmon may only be raised in land-based, secure hatcheries in Panama and Canada.

However, environmental groups in the country have already brought forward a court case in an attempt to halt the production of the Salmon in the country.

The Consumer’s Union said the FDA’s approval was based on “inadequate science and unfounded assumptions”.

Critics of the move have also highlighted the risk of the salmon escaping from the hatcheries and breeding with wild salmon.
