An initiative has been launched by a group of international chefs in Rio de Janeiro to combat widespread hunger.

Italian chef Massimo Bottura and Brazilian chef David Hertz, are spearheading the scheme that will see surplus food donated by the Olympic village given to impoverished residents.

The RefettoRio Gastromotiva initiative comes after the 31st Olympics came under criticism for sidelining the poor and disadvantaged in Brazil.

Some 5,000 meals are produced daily using ingredients that would otherwise be thrown in the bin.

It will also provide vocational training for aspiring restaurant professionals such as cooks, bakers and servers.

After the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the initiative will function as a “social business” according to Mr Hertz.
