The Boston Marathon Bombing sent shockwaves throughout the USA and indeed the rest of the world.

For as crowds gathered to watch the marathon, two bombs were set off, killing three people and injuring 282 others.

The bombs exploded about thirteen seconds and 630 feet apart near the finish line on Boylston Street.

What followed was an outpouring of grief for all of the victims who were killed or injured or killed in the blast and a media feeding frenzy.

One of those victims was an eight year old child called Martin Richards who was killed – while it was reported that his mother Denise had been severely injured.

The FBI wasted no time in releasing images of the suspects caught on CCTV and with the help of the public, they were publicly identified as Dzhokhar, 19, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26.

After one of the suspects was apprehended by the police, it was claimed that he threw bombs, hijacked a car, robbed a convenience store and then became involved in a shootout with the police when he was cornered by MIT officers. He was subsequently shot dead.

It was then reported that Officer Collier from the MIT police was killed by one of the suspects, after apparently shooting at them unprovoked.

According to officials, one of the suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was identified by the Russian government as an extremist Dagestani or Chechen Islamist terrorist, and they were so concerned about it that in late 2010 they asked the US government to take action.

But in 2012, despite being a concern to Russian security, Tsarnaev was able to fly to Russia and pass through their airport security checks, which are known to be the most comprehensive and efficient in the world. He then proceeded to Dagestan, which is infamous for being at the centre of one of the world’s heaviest military occupations, with a complex network of undercover police surveillance. However, it is said that he avoided interception and was able to go through terror training or Islamist indoctrination. He then flew out again without being detected by the Russian security services and made his way to Boston, America to carry out the bombings.

The result was carnage and terror on a mass scale as the citizens of Boston became embroiled in a game of cat and mouse between the suspects, MIT police – who hours before the event – had carried out an extensive drill of the area, practicing their reaction in the event of bombs or explosives being activated. Radiation detection equipment was also used during the drill and at least five private security companies are said to have been involved.

But what of the other suspect? Dzhokhar, who was described as a normal kid before the incident, hid out on a boat before escaping and becoming involved in a shootout, in which he was eventually shot and is now recovering in hospital, we are told. However, in a new twist to the tale, two unnamed U.S. officials told the Associated Press that he was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard.

The report contradicts the Boston police department’s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev’s capture on Friday which described a firefight between him and officers before he was captured. It also contradicted many mainstream media accounts of Tsarnaev’s final moments of freedom.

These new accounts of the incidents emerged after the mother of the two suspects, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, insisted that her sons were not the bombers. Questions have also been raised over the police’s treatment of the two suspects and the fact that despite being on the FBI watchlist and questioned years prior to the bombings, the FBI still needed the help of the public to identify them.

Following the attacks, the government wasted no time in implementing martial law in Boston.

The whole city was in lockdown as the US military along with law enforcement conducted house to house searches without a warrant, implemented a no-fly zone over the city, trawled the streets with armoured vehicles, halted public transport, closed stores and banned taxi services.

Meanwhile, websites across the internet buzzed with video reports of police ordering innocent people out of their homes at gunpoint with frisk-searches being conducted.

Whatever transpires from this highly complex case, two things are clear. Firstly, the contradictory reports by both the mainstream media and police certainly make it difficult for the truth of what really happened on that fateful day to be established. Secondly, our hearts go out to all those who died and were injured in the bombings. Indeed, we’d like to pay our respects to the innocent civilians across the world who are caught up in senseless acts of terrorism.
