Police officers who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist people barely get a look in or a mention when it comes to media exposure.

This is because hardly a day goes by when you do not hear of US cops committing some of the most horrendous crimes.

Whether it is beating up a pregnant woman, shooting an unarmed protester or conducting cavity searches on the street, it seems there is no end to the aggression and outright brutality committed by US cops.

That is what makes it all the more heartwarming when a police officer not only fulfills their duty in a professional and reasonable way, but actually goes above and beyond the call of duty to help someone.

Virginia state trooper Matt Okes hit the headlines when a mother Nada Oswu, praised him for staying with her son Joseph throughout the late hours of the night after his car broke down on the road.

He stayed with the Virginia Tech student until the AAA arrived and used the powerful lights on his own police car to alert other driver’s of Joseph’s inert vehicle.

Owusu’s photo of the incident has gone viral. It’s been shared more than 22,000 times.

Even once the AAA arrived, he followed Joseph home to ensure he arrived home safely.

Why does this warrant a headline? Because at a time when all we hear is stories of officers brutalizing people, it is important to point out the incidents where this does not occur – if only to show some of the less valiant members of law enforcement how it should be done.
