A great deal has been written about the benefits of coconut oil and the amazing benefits it can have for your health.

However, in this blog, I concentrate only on the benefits that have been backed up by scientific studies. So far, all of the indications are, that coconut oil is something of a superfood.

So what is so great about coconut oil?

Kills bacteria and funguses, and viruses

One of the biggest benefits of coconut oil is that it can play a leading role in warding off disease. Almost half of the fatty acids in coconut oil are comprised of the 12-carbon Lauric Acid.

When digested, it forms a monoglyceride called monolaurin. Both lauric acid and monolaurin can kill toxic pathogens such as funguses, germs and viral infections, according to a study published within the PubMed journal.

Good fats

Coconut oil in the past had a bit of a reputation for being one of the most prominent sources of saturated fats.

However, not all fats are created equal.

Coconut oil contains Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) – which are fatty acids of a medium length. These types of fats play a leading role in helping to prevent the escalation of diseases such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

Increased energy

Coconut oil is great for giving you an energy boost, because the medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in it can increase energy expenditure compared to the same amount of calories from longer chain fats, according to another study published in the PubMed journal.

In fact, researchers believe that 15-30 grams of MCTs per day can boost 24 hour energy expenditure by five per cent.

Reduces appetite

The fatty compounds in coconut oil break down in the body at a slower rate, which has a range of beneficial effects including appetite reduction and improvements in moods.

Researchers gave various amounts of MCTs to six healthy men, and found those who consumed the most MCTs ate 256 fewer calories per day, on average.

A separate study found that those who ate the most MCTs at breakfast ate significantly fewer calories at lunch.

Weight loss

By reducing hunger and cravings, coconut oil can also be greatly advantageous when it comes to losing weight.

Top up

And while you’re busy dribbling coconut oil all over your fruit salad, why not top it up with a glass of coconut water as well?

It has all the same benefits as coconut oil but with the added advantage of hydrating you twice as fast as many of the leading sports and energy drinks.

In fact, it may even be better than pure water, because of its high concentration of potassium and natural sugar, which replenishes your body with all the minerals it needs, while you are on the go.
