crime decreaseDespite the scare stories often perpetrated by the mainstream media, crime has actually gone down according to national statistics.

Findings from the 2011/12 Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) showed that  just 5.9 per cent of adults aged 16 and over fell victim to personal crimes.

Just over 16 per cent experienced household crime, but the figures were much lower than those reported by the CSEW in the 1990s.

Only three per cent of adults had been a victim of some form of violence and the likelihood of falling prey to crime, decreased with age.

The constant reporting of every stabbing, shooting and rapes feeds into the fear of crime which then justifies further heavy handed tactics by the state, and the building of new prisons which are profitable to private interests. It also increases the energy and expectation that people have of crime, and thus helps to perpetrate it.

But more than that, it helps to reinforce the helplessness and negativity felt by the general population. This is why you see people walking past when someone is in trouble on the streets- because of the fear of crime and repercussions.

This fear is circulated by not just the media but also the government through the introduction of various bills and speeches, and yet their own figures suggest that crime is decreasing.
