Prime minister Rishi Sunak has told NHS workers to get used to robot workers and AI playing a greater role in patient care.
The announcement came as the health service prepares to cut its workforce by half as part of a cost-cutting exercise. More than 6,500 staff are expected to lose their jobs as a result of the cutbacks.
Sunak claimed that more automation and investment in robotics is “low hanging fruit” that will increase pay and economic growth “quickly”.
He said: “If we can get that right with more robotics and automation, then we can drive up productivity. It reduces some of the pressure on labour, and creates good jobs for people.”
It is expected that robots will replace almost half of NHS staff. Prior to his appointment as the prime minister, Sunak revealed plans to replace human teachers with AI in British schools.
