Scientists have recently discovered an ocean 400 miles beneath the ground which could fill our oceans three times over, it has been revealed.

The revelations about this giant reservoir of water was recently made after researchers spent decades theorising over what lies beneath.

This new discovery appears to suggest that the Earth’s surface water actually came from within, as part of a “whole-Earth water cycle,” rather than the prevailing theory of icy comets striking Earth billions of years ago.

The study was conducted by a range of geophysicists and scientists from across the US, who carried out complex calculations and used specialist equipment such as seismographs to monitor the earth’s movements.

To get an idea of just how deep this ocean is, it is necessary to point out that so far, humans have only ever been able to drill 12 kilometres into the ground — about half way through the Earth’s crust — and we had to stop because the geothermal energy was melting the equipment.

This ocean is about 660 kilometres into the earth’s crust.
