Russian bomber planes were recently spotted over the East Coast of Ireland, which caused a commercial passenger flight to be diverted, it has been revealed.

The two Tu-95 bombers flew just 40 kilometres off the coast of Ireland, and crossed through civilian airline traffic lanes.

This caused planes carrying hundreds of passengers to be diverted or delayed to avoid a potential collision with the bombers.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has since issued a statement saying the planes were escorted until they were out of the UK area of interest.

It is understood that the planes had managed to cloak their presence and avoid detection on the radar for a long time, before they caused problems.

The move was seen as a show of strength by Russia amid tensions over the conflict in Ukraine, where Prime Minister David Cameron has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of challenging the territorial integrity of Kiev.

The Irish authority said that the two Russian aircraft were flying with their transponders switched off – devices that help aircraft to be identified by air traffic control radars.

However, this was not the first time that Russian bomber planes have been seen in the UK,

Last month it was revealed that Russian Bear bomber planes were also spotted in Cornwall.

The incident was part of a series of incursions from Russian warplanes.

Despite statements to the contrary by the MoD, a number of witness had spotted the planes flying over UK.
