GMO food

It has recently been reported that genetically modified apples have been approved by the industry-corrupted USDA. They of course are only affecting citizens in the USA at the moment, but it could only be a matter of time before it starts to crop up in other countries as well.

According to the press release from Food and Water Watch: “The USDA’s environmental review received 73,000 comments that overwhelmingly opposed the commercialization of Arctic Apples. The GMO apple that just received approval was developed by the Okanagan Specialty Fruits Company, which says it “…married the best of nature with the best of science. In addition to genetically modified apples, the Okanagan Specialty Fruits Company also promises to roll out genetically modified peaches, cherries and pears.”

However, in terms of the technology used to create these GMO fruits, and the genes needed, Food & Water Watch reports: “The particular gene targeted by this technology allows the apples to be sliced without turning brown, which could mislead consumers into thinking they are eating fresh apples when they might be eating apples on the verge of rotting. Browning is an important indicator to consumers in determining the freshness of an apple or apple slice.

“The silenced gene is also heavily involved in a plant’s natural defence against pests and pathogens, which could lead to trees that are less healthy than non-GMO apples and rely on more chemical treatments to ward off pests and disease.”

It won’t be long until this technology is being used in Europe, if not already, and we will all be eating GMO fruit and vegetables, if people remain complacent.  At the moment GMO labelling is compulsory, but in the future, the governments may resist labelling the food that comes from GMO and as a result make us blind to the reality of what we are really eating. It is only by questioning the food we eat, and buying direct from the farmers that we can really be sure that the food we feed our children with, is healthy and natural.
