A 95 year old man has died after US police officers tasered him to death following a confrontation.

John Warna, who was living in a retirement home in Park Forest, Illinois died  after police shot him with a stun gun after being called out to intervene in a dispute between the man and staff at the facility.

The police alleged that the victim threatened paramedics and staff with a cane and a metal shoehorn to avoid being committed for medical treatment against his will.

They claim that the man became aggressive with officers on the scene and picked up a butchers knife that just happened to be lying around.

The resident was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later pronounced dead.
