Well-known politicians, including those who are currently serving in office have been named as paedophiles by victims to a sex abuse hotline.

This latest disclosure comes after a string of damning revelations and child abuse scandals which have rocked the political establishment over the last year or so.

A report published by the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) said some names were mentioned “again and again”.

There has been an increase in the number of young children and teenagers coming forward to report these allegations in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

Investigators found that ex-BBC DJ Jimmy Savile sexually assaulted victims aged five to 75 in NHS hospitals over decades of unrestricted access.

Savile was given access to some of the most vulnerable people in the UK – including children with mental health problems and those in children’s homes.

He was also given the keys to Broadmoor – which houses some of the most dangerous criminally insane people in the UK.

It is unclear why Savile was given the keys to such a volatile institution which restricts access to even some of the most professionally capable individuals. No explanation has been given.

Savile, a close friend of Margaret Thatcher and Prince Charles was knighted by the queen, and was once held in high esteem by the British public at the height of his fame.

However, after his death, the truth about his vile practices came to light when hundreds of men and women came forward to describe how they were raped repeatedly and/or molested by Savile.

Many of those victims had reported their allegations to the police while he was alive, but were ignored or laughed at.

However, it appears that Savile was not the only high-profile paedophile that was operating at the time.

Indeed, this new report suggests that there are currently many more like him that are evading justice because of the positions they hold.

According to the NAPAC, serving judges, top police officers, as well as politicians have been named as predatory paedophiles by victims who are still not being heard.

The report added that many of the same names are cropping up over and over again.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Jon Bird of the NAPAC, told Sky news: “The names of people in very high places – politicians, senior police officers and even some judges – have been going around as alleged abusers for a very long time.

“Since the Jimmy Savile revelations, there’s been a sea change in the way police and the CPS respond to these sort of complaints and now, at last, it looks like these people are going to be investigated.”

Although the home secretary Theresa May has enlisted the chief of child protection charity, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, to investigate a historic investigation into sex abuse claims carried out in the 1980s, the government has neglected to mention whether any investigations will be carried out into these recent allegations.

The report into historic claims of abuse will conveniently not surface until after the next General Election.

Mark Sedwill is to face questions from the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee about how his department lost or destroyed 114 files that could shed light on alleged abuse in the 1980s.
