A Chinese scientist has been jailed after creating the world’s first gene-edited babies.
Chinese authorities jailed He Jiankui for his experiment on human embryos after the three genetically modified girls were born.
His arrest sparked calls to protect the world’s first gene-edited babies.
Qiu Renzong, from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, and Lei Ruipeng at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan have called for the government to do more to protect the girls. They suggested that funds should be set up to look after the three children.
Jiankui shocked the world in 2018 when he announced that he had created genetically modified twin girls, “Lulu” and “Nana”.
The court in Shenzhen found Jiankui guilty of “illegal medical practices” and in addition to the prison sentence fined him 3m yuan (£327,360).
He is currently serving a three-year sentence in prison.
