Manuel Valls, the French Prime Minister

Following Manuel Valls, the French Prime Minister’s visit to Calais, he announced that the EU pledges extra money to turn what is known as the jungle into a humanitarian camp for 1500 refugees in 2016. The change of heart has come after the EU granted France an extra €5 million to turn the manmade Shanty Town into a refugee camp.

Frans Timmermans, European Commission vice president, was also present in Calais along with other EU and French officials, including Bernard Cazeneuve, the interior minister and EU home affairs commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos.

Mr Cazeneuve told the press that, “the funds would go towards creating a “humanitarian camp” to house 1,500 migrants, and that we will never turn away those who need protection.”

However, he made it clear when questioned, “the new camp will not be similar to Sangatte, and reiterated that the new camp was part of a “step by step” and “pragmatic” approach to deal with the problem in a “global” manner.”

It only remains a matter of time before we see the real effects of the humanitarian approach to the problem in the French town. We have seen borders reinforced, and other countries installing their own borders again to help control the influx of refugees travelling across Europe with the help of human traffickers. Creating centres to welcome the refugees across Europe is the only solution, if EU leaders are to get on top of the crisis.
